Route 9 Progresses Toward Completion
Charleston,W.Va. – West Virginia Division of Highway (WVDOH) officials announced today they have received a positive ruling on the 'Effects Report' from the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), moving the Charles Town to the Virginia line section of Route 9 one step closer to completion.

ACHP is an independent agency of the United States Government, located in Washington D.C., that monitors the effects on historic properties by different types of projects. In the case of the WVDOH, they review information regarding historic properties that potentially could be affected by the work that is proposed and planned for the roads of West Virginia.

Highways Commissioner Sam Beverage said that he is extremely pleased that the ACHP agreed with WVDOH's conclusions on the 'Effects Report.'

"The Council has agreed with our findings and has accepted our mitigation document with some minor additions. We have been waiting for this report since April. Now that we have it, we can proceed with the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS)."

According to Beverage, the FEIS will be complete within days and sent to the Federal Highway Administration for review and approval.

Subsequently, there will be a thirty-day public comment period and then the FHWA will issue a Record of Decision (ROD). This will conclude the environmental process allowing WVDOH to proceed to the final phase of development, including final engineering design and right-of–way acquisition.

Beverage added, "Governor Underwood has stressed the importance of a safe and efficient transportation system. We are building highways to make communities safer and provide economic development opportunities. The Charles Town to the Virginia line section is a critical segment to the completion of the Route 9 project and to the Governor's overall transportation plan."

Construction for this section is expected to begin this fall. For more information on the Route 9 project, log on to www.wvroute9.com.
